Hornsbury Mill

History of Hornsbury Mill

Tucked away in the rural heart of Somerset near the market town of Chard, Hornsbury Mill stands as a remarkable testament to the county’s agricultural and industrial heritage. With its roots stretching back to the medieval period, this beautiful watermill has evolved over the centuries from a working corn mill into a serene retreat and celebrated venue, all while preserving the rustic charm and craftsmanship of its earliest days.

The site itself dates to at least the early 14th century, with the first documented reference to a mill here appearing around 1327. This medieval origin underscores the long-standing importance of milling to the local community, as small water-powered mills were essential for grinding grain to feed the surrounding farms and villages.

The Iconic Waterwheel

The structure visitors see today was largely shaped in the early 19th century. Around 1835, Hornsbury Mill was extensively rebuilt as a corn mill, using traditional Somerset materials including local flint, elm timbers, and the honey-colored hamstone that characterizes much of the region’s vernacular architecture. Large stone walls, exposed beams, and intricately cut hamstone mullioned windows still reflect this era of careful craftsmanship. A major development occurred in the latter half of the 19th century, when the now-iconic waterwheel was installed, likely around 1870. Driven by the millstream diverted from the nearby river, this large cast-iron wheel harnessed the flow of water to power the internal milling machinery. Remarkably, much of that historic mechanism still remains in place today, offering visitors a glimpse into the mechanical ingenuity of the Victorian era.

In Recent Times

In the late 20th century, the mill underwent a thoughtful and sensitive restoration. The transformation from working mill to hospitality venue was carried out with an eye toward conserving the building’s original character. The great waterwheel was carefully restored, along with much of the internal gearing and wooden millworks. Architectural details like the stonework, exposed beams, and original windows were retained and celebrated, forming the backbone of the new design.

Today, Hornsbury Mill operates as a boutique hotel, restaurant, and wedding venue, offering a tranquil and picturesque setting that blends history with modern comfort. Set amid five acres of landscaped water gardens, the site continues to charm visitors with its timeless ambience.
