The structure visitors see today was largely shaped in the early 19th century. Around 1835, Hornsbury Mill was extensively rebuilt as a corn mill, using traditional Somerset materials including local flint, elm timbers, and the honey-colored hamstone that characterizes much of the region’s vernacular architecture. Large stone walls, exposed beams, and intricately cut hamstone mullioned windows still reflect this era of careful craftsmanship. A major development occurred in the latter half of the 19th century, when the now-iconic waterwheel was installed, likely around 1870. Driven by the millstream diverted from the nearby river, this large cast-iron wheel harnessed the flow of water to power the internal milling machinery. Remarkably, much of that historic mechanism still remains in place today, offering visitors a glimpse into the mechanical ingenuity of the Victorian era.
